Do you know of a young person:

  • Who wants to feel better about themselves?
  • Who wants to make better choices for the future?
  • Who is worried about being in trouble?

Would they like to talk to someone who will listen and support and help them find a way forward - which is right for them?

We are a local community based service in Chalfont St Giles who provides a free confidential one-to-one service to help young people aged between 11 and 18 who live in the Chiltern District of Buckinghamshire. Our Mentoring Project began in 2005 as a result of growing concerns about young people. It had become noticeable that many young people were experiencing a wide range of complex issues.

We work closely with parents, individuals and a variety of organisations that refer young people who are experiencing difficulties, whatever the nature.

Mentors are recruited and trained to work voluntarily, on a one-to-one basis, with the young people. Their role is simply to motivate and encourage young people, whilst building a relationship, aiming to increase confidence and self-esteem and so enabling them to make more appropriate choices for their future.

Mentoring is a process, which involves passing on knowledge and experience. The process is built on mutual respect and trust. The mentor acts as a role model - someone young people can trust who will listen to their concerns and make time for them.

Our experience has demonstrated that the participants respond positively to volunteer mentors and develop strong bonds with them. The idea of the scheme has a definite advantage as the young people soon learn that their mentor spends time with them genuinely, because they want to, not because they get paid.

At present we have a number of trained mentors who have undergone a Criminal Records Bureau Check and are already working in the community.

One mentor commented, "Mentoring has changed the way I look at life. The satisfaction of working one to one with a young person and helping them through a difficult time cannot be put into words."
