The County Mobile:
About the Community Library
The Community Library is run and
staffed entirely by volunteers from the village, but it is linked into the
Buckinghamshire county library system so that users can benefit from an
integrated service with the County.
It opened in January 2007 following the
County's decision to provide only a limited mobile library service for the
village.
Membership is free
Membership of the Community Library
gives you membership of the County Libraries as well. If you have a County
Library card you can continue to use it. New members joining the Community
Library will be issued with a County Library card. This entitles you to
use the Community Library and all Buckinghamshire County Libraries
including the Mobile Library. Membership is free.
You can join at any age. Adults need to
show proof of current name, address and signature such as driving licence,
allowance book or bank statement and to fill in a registration form. If
you are under 16 your parent or guardian will need to sign your
registration form and provide proof of their identity.
If your card is lost or stolen please
let us know immediately so we can prevent it being used.
Using the Community Library
You can borrow up to 15 books for up to
three weeks. The loan terms are the same as the County. You can renew
books, unless they are in demand, at the Community library, any County
library, by phone or over the internet. If you renew by phone or over the
internet any fines will be added to your card to be paid on your next
visit.
About the book stock
There are over 5,000 books in the
Community Library. There is a wide selection of children’s and adult
fiction and a good selection of popular non-fiction books including
biographies, travel, gardening, cooking and history. The latest “top ten”
paperbacks are stocked. We have some large print books. If we haven’t got
what you want we will most likely be able to obtain the book from the
County.
Many of the books in the library are
gifted by residents. If you have a recent book in nearly new condition
that you have enjoyed reading, please consider gifting it to the Community
Library.
Book Reservations at the library and
via the internet
County books may be reserved at the
Community Library or via the internet. You can choose to be advised about
the receipt of your reserved book at the Community Library by post, email
or phone. The reservation service costs £1 per book at the library and for
web reservations. The service is free for over 65s and for
children’s books.
You can search the County catalogue
here.
Internet Access
There are two PCs providing public
internet access. Microsoft Office software together with printing and
scanning facilities are available. The use of the PCs costs £1 per hour or
part hour. It is free for up to an hour for children and young people
under 18 years (with their library card) and those on Jobseekers
Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance.
Newspapers and magazines
The Community Library has The Times,
Buckinghamshire Advertiser and a small selection of magazines. Which?
magazine with back numbers for three years is available for reference.
Children’s DVDs
The library has a stock of children’s
DVDs available for hire at £1.10 for a week. Note: Unfortunately, the
County currently does not permit the Community Library to lend out or
return any County DVDs, videos or games. So if you have borrowed a county
DVD / video from say Amersham library, it has to be returned to a County
Library or the County Mobile.
Local and tourist information
The library's aim is to be the main
information provider for both local people and visitors. We hold a great
deal of information on the village and the immediate local area, together
with some information on other parts of Buckinghamshire and London. We
have access to a vast amount of tourist information via the world wide
web.
Electronic-databases
From your home PC you can use your
library card to access, free of charge, a number of electronic-databases.
e.g. Encyclopaedia Britannica, Who’s Who, Oxford English Dictionary, some
newspapers and magazines. Details of the available databases may be found
here.
The databases can of course also be
accessed at the library.
Become a Friend of the Library
Whilst the Community library is free
for all to use, financially it relies entirely on local support i.e.
donations from individuals and village organisations and a grant from the
Parish Council. You can help by becoming a Friend of the Library for an
annual subscription of £10. Subscription forms are available
here or in the library. The Community Library is a registered charity.
The Friends of the Library have an
active literary group who arrange talks by authors. All are welcome to
these events.
